Are you Ready To Compete?

12/13/2017

10 Tips You Should Know.
1. One of the most important things to know is.  What division you will be competing in.  Often competitors do not realize there are different style suits for the different divisions.
  • A bikini competitor would not wear a figure suit or vice versa.  If you are doing a cross over, keep in mind that you will need two separate suits for that competition.
2. Do your research on the federation you will be entering.  Each federation has different rules it is important to know what is required of you before entering.
  • For example, some natural federations such as SNBF, DFAC, WNBF to name a few.  Will require 50% back coverage on bottoms.  Knowing this ahead of time will allow you to make sure you purchase the correct style bottoms and avoid possibly getting disqualified.
3. Start to look for your suit at least 12 weeks out from your competition date.  This will allow you to not have to settle for a last minute suit that may not fit correctly.
  • Most important when looking, make sure that you have a budget!
4. Now that you found your suit.  Do you have the accessories to complete the look?
  • Here is a list of often forgotten items:
  • Back-up pair of heels.  Make sure you break them in as well.  (The plastic is often very hard and will cause you blisters) Bring flip flops or slippers so you are not wearing your heels all day.
  • Do you have your jewelry? ( a pair of earrings, bracelets, rings.)
  • Do you have your robe or comfortable loose clothing to wear back stage to keep yourself warm.  (Make sure you have dark color clothing/robe to keep from getting ruined by the tan.) Do not wear a heavy robe that will rub off your tan, a black satin robe is usually the go to choice for most competitors.
5. Know about your posing requirements.  Again know your federation rules this will allow you to know what is required of you as far as posing.
  • It is very important to at least attend 2 posing sessions prior to stepping on stage.  It is not mandatory that you have a posing coach, but having one will give you some understanding  on what the judges are looking for.  (Keep in mind that your posing ability and routine are the most important part of this competition other than your physique of course.  You could have the best physique on stage but posing can absolutely either make or break your chances of winning the show.
6. Time to sign up for the show.  Remember to register for the correct class.  It is important to know the different classes or division you will be competing in.
  • Are you a bikini or figure competitor?  Are you a Novice, or Masters.  Have you place top 5 in a previous show.  Knowing this will allow you know how many classes you can sign up for.  The more classes you sign up the bigger the chances of winning.  However, each class can cost up to 100 dollars each.  Signing up for a show may cost you around $200 or higher.  Again it all depends in how many classes you decide to sign up for and the purchase of the organizations membership card.  This is why having a budget is so important.
7. When signing up for your show.  Make sure you make a list of other services that will need to be order.
  • List of often forgotten services:
  • Schedule your tanning appointment unless you are doing your own.  Some competitions require you to use only their services.  If this is the case book your appointment early.
  • Schedule your hair and makeup appointment again unless you are doing your own.  Some competitions require you to use only their services.  If this is the case book your appointment early.  (you don't want to get your make up done at 3 am because that is the last available appointment)
  • Schedule your polygraph appointment.  Not all federations require this.  This goes back to knowing the rules and requirements for the show.
  • Book  your hotel early as rooms often fill up fast.  Keep in mind some hotels will charge you an extra fee for getting tanning product on their sheets.  (I suggest you bring your own sheets)
  • Waxing.  This is very important; you do not want to experiment getting waxing done on peek week.  If you have never been waxed before I suggest getting wax a few weeks prior to see how your body reacts.  Everyone skin is different, knowing this may prevent you of getting any blistering and irritation prior to show day.  You definitely do not want to have blistering or irritation on your skin when tanning day comes.
8. Here are some peek week last minute details.  You made it to peek week, everything is booked and ready to go.  Last minute things you should do before show day.
  • Prep your skin at least 3 to 4 day prior to your first tanning appointment.  Exfoliating your skin daily will remove dead skin or peeling skin which will often cause your tan to look blotchy and uneven on stage.  (I recommend using ProTan Get Buffed, it is great, it is exclusively designed to maximize and enhance your tanning results while helping to balance out your skin’s pH level.)
  • Make sure you get your manicure and pedicure done during peek week so its nice and fresh for the show.  Tips are not required however they look great on stage.  If you do not want to pay to get a full set of nails done just for the show, then I suggest you get press on tips.  They look good, are cheap and easy to take off.
  • Now I know this is totally random.  But I thought I share with you.  Do you want to know what my biggest pet peeve is? Here it is... (TAN LINES) I know summer time is great for laying out in the sun, but do not wear shorts or bottoms with weird cuts and strings.  Yes, you will get tanned.  But No, the spray tan will not cover those awful tan lines.  (Don't be that athlete with all the tan lines!)
9.  The shaving dilemma.  To shave or not to shave? This is the question I get asked the most.
  • There is no doubt that shaving is required, specially in those specific areas.  However, some competitors feel it is not necessary to do your arms, stomach and back.  (its only peach fuss, some will say)  I would normally agree with that statement because who really like shaving anyways.
  • Here is a thought, the tanning gets sprayed on and often just settles on your peach fuss.  This causes the tan to not really set evenly on your skin and making your tan look blotchy on stage.  You have spent the time prepping your skin, don't cut corners shave your whole body to get that flawless tan.
10. Last tip and most important tip of them all goes back to Posing.  (Posing, Posing, Posing!)
  • Stage presence is really important I would say just as important as your physique.  You could be tied to first place, however your posing is not up to par to the other competitor this will really hurt your chances of getting that 1st place.
  • Posing practice should be an added routine just like your workouts.  The better you get at posing, the easier and more comfortable you will look on stage during your presentation.  Remember to have fun on stage, this is what you worked so hard to accomplish these past 12 weeks or longer.

Enjoy the journey and always trust the process...

Taking Care Of Your Suit.

4/13/2017

SUIT CARE:
It is imperative to take care of your investment. Keep in mind some fabrics are more delicate than others and a little TLC can definitely help with the lifespan of your suit.
When washing your suits please follow the care tips below:

WASHING YOUR SUIT:
  • Wash/Rinse suit as soon as you take it off.  This will allow you to remove all of the tanning before it has time to stain or settle on the fabric.
  • Rinse with water repeatedly until water from the suit is clear.
  • Hang the suit to air dry until you can proceed with properly hand  washing your suit.
  • Please wash by hand in a sink of cold water using a mild detergent. (Do not use Bleach or Bleach Alternative Detergents)
  • Gently hand wash your suit in cold water and continue to rinse until the water runs clear.
  • If glue or tanning stains have settled into the suit liner, then lightly brush the inside of the suit with a toothbrush or a small soft bristle brush.
  • Do not scrub or brush the outside of the suit especially on hologram fabrics as these fabrics can show signs of wear much faster.
  • Hang to dry over a sink or bathtub.
Additional Tips:
  • Always wash ASAP and don't let the tan set/dry any longer than possible.
  • If possible always wait until the suit has been completely air dried before packing up the suit.  This will help prevent mold and odor from developing.
  • Do not soak your suit!  Extensive soaking promotes fabric dyes to run and fade.  Also may cause some of the rhinestones to come off.
  • Hologram fabrics will turn silver if exposed to harsh washing/scrubbing.
  • Baby oil is often used for glaze but it is highly discouraged due to the potential damage to your suit.
  • Do NOT dry clean your suit as the chemicals used in dry cleaning can cause damage to the glue and make your suit unusable.
  • When possible save your suit for the stage and practice your posing in an old suit or bikini.
